Have you ever stopped to ponder what makes nature so alluring to the eye?

Think about a simple blade of grass, leaf or flower petal … they are all made up of shapes, textures and a multitude of colours.

A pink flower is never magnetic because of one colour alone. If you look closely you’ll see a subtle touch of yellow, another shade of pink, the texture of its petals, and even the green stem - all of these together are what ultimately capture your eye.

Recently on my walks, I’ve noticed that nature is always working with shape, texture and colour - in varying proportions, in constant dialogue with one another. Nothing stands alone. Everything is in relationship.

It’s something I’ve always instinctively understood, but only now have I found the words to explain why.

Imagine looking at your wardrobe through the same lens - it’s never about the individual pieces, but the relationship between them.

It’s why our living rooms feel so inviting and offer countless clues about what brings us a sense of ease. The shapes, textures, colours, proportions and even the negative space all work together in relationship with one another to create a feeling of calm, balance and authentically.

This is what I teach my clients when we reach the styling phase of my method. Just as we instinctively compose the spaces we live in, we can learn to compose our wardrobes with the same intention and understanding. Because no colour stands on its own - there is always a relationship between tone, texture, balance, proportion, contrast … and the space that allows each element to breathe.

To me, the composition of a beautiful outfit happens when you begin to play with these elements - not only to create ease and balance, but to express the ease and balance within yourself.

This is what I mean by mindful, intentional curation.

Play.

Explore.

Be you.
